What’s in season in June

The first month of Winter. Cool days and nights, drinking hot toddies in front of a cosy fire, snuggled down in a blanket with a hot chocolate, slow-cooked stews and warm desserts. The joys of this season.

In fruit, Mandarins are the star this month. Juicy and easy to peel Imperials are at the forefront, followed by other varieties, such as Daisy, Honey Murcott and Ellendale in the coming months.

Navel oranges are going strong this month too, perfect for that Vitamin C hit. Pineapples are here to bring in the sunshine on a winter’s day with their sweet tropical taste.

Strawberries from Queensland show their faces. Delicious for strawberry shortcake or sliced on top of pancakes. Rhubarb is another goodie becoming more abundant this month. Apple and rhubarb crumble on that cool winter night. Black Sapote could appear sometime this month bringing its delicious chocolate flavour to tempt our taste buds.

Globe Artichoke bring that bit of interest in the vegetable lines this month, with their heart of goodness. Ginger is plentiful. Bringing warmth to stir fries, curries and the delicious lemon, honey and ginger drink. Japanese pumpkin, Potato and Carrot are our staple “go to” in the Winter months – perfect for that Sunday roast.

Beetroot brings a delicious sweetness and colour to any roast vegetable medley in June. As well as Sweet Potato, giving a nice difference to any mash. Leeks stand tall this month. Potato and leek soup anyone?

Cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli are still going strong in June. Asian greens, another delicious addition to stir-fries, are now coming from Queensland this month as well as the southern states.
